AI & culture. New funding priority 2028

A themed year on artificial intelligence in culture is planned for 2028. The application deadlines for the new funding priority are August 31, 2026 and February 28, 2027.

AI & Culture

Artificial intelligence is one of the most important current phenomena that has significantly changed our everyday lives - and developments are progressing rapidly. AI is also opening up a wide range of new creative possibilities in the cultural sector. In addition to openness and curiosity, there are also questions about how to deal with the new technology.

This was also demonstrated in 2025 by the Westphalian cultural conference “PROMPT:>_Generate a conference on AI and culture” of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe, at which more than 300 participants from cultural administrations and institutions, associations and the independent scene addressed the opportunities and challenges.

With the new funding focus, the LWL-Kulturstiftung is transferring this topic into practical cultural work. The examination of possible applications in a cultural context is intended to help classify AI and help shape its responsible use.

The aim is to present a broad-based cultural program with events and offerings from all sectors in Westphalia-Lippe in 2028. It is intended to raise awareness of the many facets of AI and culture with low-threshold and highly professional implementations and at the same time encourage dialogue.

Object of the funding

The usual funding criteria and requirements of the LWL-Kulturstiftung apply to participation in the thematic focus. In addition, a comprehensible explanation of the role of AI for the planned project is necessary for the application for the funding priority.

AI should be used as a supporting tool and open up new potential for the creative process. High-profile cultural offerings and events must take place in Westfalen-Lippe in 2028. Projects without the active integration of AI systems are not eligible for funding.

The general eligibility criteria are:
  • Regional reference
  • Cultural added value
  • Supra-local orientation
  • Network character
  • Public appeal
  • Interdisciplinarity

Schedule

There are two deadlines for submitting applications for participation in the "AI & Culture" funding priority:
August 31, 2026
February 28, 2027

Decisions on the applications submitted will be made at the subsequent meetings of the Board of Trustees (November 2026 and probably May/June 2027). The cultural program is to be implemented in public events and offerings in the region in 2028.

The funding priority complements the general funding program of the LWL-Kulturstiftung. Projects without a thematic reference to “AI & Culture” can also be applied for within the specified deadlines.

Consulting

The LWL-Kulturstiftung offers pre-application consultations for all interested parties: A written project outline and - if already available - an initial cost and financing plan can serve as a basis for discussion.

In the meeting, project managers can present their idea and clarify questions on formal and cultural issues. The LWL-Kulturstiftung team does not provide advice on legal or technical issues.

The "K3 KI.Kunst.Kultur" competence network founded in March 2026 is also dedicated to the topic of AI and culture.

23 North Rhine-Westphalian institutions from the fields of culture, universities and cultural policy, including well-known players from Westphalia-Lippe, are participating in the unique initiative of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was created under the leadership of the Dortmund Academy for Theater and Digitality. In future, an office in Dortmund will be the central point of contact for exchange, knowledge transfer and the strengthening of cultural professionals.

The LWL-Kulturstiftung acts as an independent partner in the competence network and supplements its offers such as further education and training with concrete project funding as part of the AI & Culture funding priority.

Funding priorities of the LWL-Kulturstiftung

With the "AI & Culture" funding priority, the LWL-Kulturstiftung is taking up a topic with socially relevant and current issues for the fourth time.

Since 2021, it has supplemented its general funding activities with thematic priorities. In this way, it provides impetus for current and future challenges of our coexistence.
