About us
Is the LWL-Kulturstiftung tied to the LWL budget?
As an independent private foundation under civil law, the foundation funds are not part of the LWL budget.
Application
Do I have to send my application digitally?
Applications should preferably be submitted digitally by e-mail by February 28 (February 29 in a leap year) or August 31 by 11:59 pm. Alternatively, postal delivery is still possible. The postmark is valid.
Can I submit an application without advice?
The prior consultation is an optional offer.
Can I start the project before the funding decision?
No. This so-called early start of measures is generally not possible.
Will I receive information during the decision-making process?
No. No information about the possible funding decision will be provided between the application and the decision of the Board of Trustees.
Do I have to enclose proof of non-profit status with my application?
The application must clearly state that the project-supporting institution has a certificate of non-profit status or has applied for one (e.g. in the case of an association being founded). Proof is mandatory at the latest when the funding agreement is concluded.
Can I submit an application as a municipal institution even if I do not have proof of non-profit status?
Yes, provided the project sponsor certifies that the project is not carried out as a commercial enterprise (BgA).
Funding priority 2028 "AI & Culture"
Do the usual eligibility criteria also apply to this thematic focus?
Yes, all information on the usual eligibility criteria can be found here.
Can I also submit projects that do not use AI by the deadlines?
Yes, during the next two application periods, this focus will complement the LWL-Kulturstiftung’s general, open-topic grant program. Projects that do not use AI remain eligible for funding.
Am I required to use AI in the project?
Yes. To be eligible to participate in the “AI & Culture” funding priority, the project must involve the use of AI. The role of AI in the project must be clearly explained in the application.
What does the phrase “AI as a supportive tool” mean?
AI is a supportive tool when it enhances—rather than replaces—human creativity. The goal is to explore the interplay between human creativity and technology, draw inspiration from it, and develop innovative formats.
Can I use existing AI systems or do I have to develop my own AI applications?
The use of existing AI systems is possible. No in-house development is expected. Project managers decide which technology to use based on the benefits and role of AI for the project itself. The LWL-Kulturstiftung does not provide technical or legal advice.
Where can I find information on using AI for the common good?
The European Union’s AI Act or the “Code of Conduct for Democratic AI” by D64 – Zentrum für Digitalen Fortschritt e.V., among others, can serve as guidelines for applications that prioritize the public good.
Do I also have to explicitly incorporate AI into the content of the courses and programs?
No. The project leaders decide on the content and structure of their project. AI, as a societal development, can be incorporated into it.
Is it possible to collaborate with partners?
Yes, cooperation with institutions and (research) facilities is generally possible.
Why are there two application deadlines for "AI & Culture"?
Because there are two application deadlines, projects with both longer and shorter lead times can be considered. There is generally no preliminary start date for the project—this should be taken into account when choosing an application deadline.
Communication
How does my event get into the calendar?
Events and offers within the scope of the funded projects can be sent to us, stating all key data (title, date, location, short text). Please only mention events whose key data are known.
Are events that are not sponsored by the LWL-Kulturstiftung also included in the calendar and on social media?
No. The prerequisite for inclusion in the LWL-Kulturstiftung’s calendar and social media is that the project is funded by the LWL-Kulturstiftung.

Are there still events in 2026?
Individual events such as exhibitions will continue until spring 2026. All information can be found in our calendar or on the information page for the respective project.
