Reading with Dinçer Güçyeter
The award-winning novel Our German Fairytale by Dinçer Güçyeter tells of the fate of Turkish Greeks, of archaic roots in Anatolian life and of the challenge of starting a new life in Germany. A story that is closely interwoven with the author’s own experiences and shows how traditional images of masculinity and the silent endurance of an exhausted mother intertwine – and thus prevent Germany from becoming the new home they long for.
The narrative stretches from the beginning of the last century to almost the present day. Dinçer Güçyeter leaves nothing out, no rape, no misunderstanding, no conflict in the workplace, whether in the shoe factory, with the farmer in the field or in his own pub. And then there is the mother’s expectation of her adolescent son, who is supposed to stand by her side as a strong man, but who himself has a completely different idea of a fulfilled life.
Our German fairy tale is a family story in many voices: Women of several generations and the son born in Germany remember in poetic, often mythical, powerful images and in monologues, dialogs, dreams, prayers, choirs.
Dinçer Güçyeter was awarded the 2023 Leipzig Book Fair Prize for this work.
