The Nights of Light Art have become a tradition in the Hellweg region; for the ninth time, the HELLWEG – a PATH OF LIGHT in the eastern Ruhr region network is offering a special program centered on light art. In addition to the 51 existing light art installations in public spaces—which illuminate the Hellweg from Ahlen to Fröndenberg and from Lippstadt to Unna—there will be an extensive lineup of events.

This year, in addition to the outdoor installations, selected light artworks by renowned light artists will be temporarily displayed for the 9th edition of the Nights of Light Art, lasting 10 to 14 days, in church spaces, including the Protestant City Church in Lünen, St. Paul’s Church in Hamm, St. Joseph’s “Bicycle Church” in Fröndenberg, St. Bartholomew’s “Culture Church” in Ahlen, and the water tower in Lippstadt. Works will be presented by artists including Jan Münster, François Morellet, Timm Ulrichs, Spencer Finch, Mischa Kuball, Brent Birnbaum, Anette Sauermann, Andreas Horlitz, molitor & kuzmin, Volkhard Kempter, IEPE, Ahn Chul Hyun, Adam Barker-Mill, Jan Phillip Scheibe, Chris Nägele, and Margareta Hesse. The selected locations are unique spaces of perception and architecture that take on a new dimension through light art. The light artworks are staged in such a way that they enter into a dialogue with the space and create new avenues for interpretation. The concept opens up fascinating possibilities for connecting art, spirituality, and the public in new contexts of meaning. In the process, art is brought out of the storage facilities of collectors, artists, or museums and presented in an unusual, architecturally distinctive setting that transforms both the perception of the works and the visitors’ experience.

Lectures and panel discussions at the respective exhibition venues will explore the related themes in greater depth. All venues will feature an accompanying program throughout the duration of the Nights of Light Art.

Visitors can explore all the artworks on their own, through guided “light journeys” to the works of HELLWEG – a LICHTWEG and the temporarily exhibited artworks, or as part of on-site guided tours. Tickets will be available in the individual cities starting in mid- to late September.
