The invention of Westphalia – Bernhard Witte’s Historia Westphaliae and the Liesborn Monastery around 1500

Liesborn Abbey Museum of the District of Warendorf, Wadersloh
Exhibition

About the project

Around 1500, the Liesborn monk Bernhard Witte wrote the oldest summarized historical account of Westphalia. The original manuscript of this Historia Westphaliae was shown for the first time in an exhibition. Visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the late medieval monastery and learn about the circumstances surrounding the creation of the chronicle. At a digital station, they were able to browse through the manuscript and the later print and view translations of individual passages.
