About the project

In and around the “Heimathafen Nordstadt” in Dortmund, traces of colonialism became visible in the city’s harbor: an exhibition on migration stories was created; existing exploitative relationships were addressed through the theme of coffee; and a concept for a decolonial monument on the Heimathafen grounds was developed. Numerous events throughout the year invited the public to follow this process.

Further information

In April 2026, the “Decolonial Memorial” was erected in Dortmund—the idea and concept for it were developed as part of the “how to decolonize heimat” project.

Project leaders at GrünBau gGmbH, together with the Decolonize Dortmund initiative, championed the erection of the monument; financial support from the City of Dortmund made it possible to erect the four-meter-tall monument on Speicherstraße in Heimathafen.

It depicts a wooden shipping crate—the kind used from the colonial era to the present day to transport goods—overgrown by a baobab (African monkey-bread tree). Background information on the history of its creation is available on the GrünBau gGmbH website and the website dedicated to the monument.
