About us
Is the LWL-Kulturstiftung tied to the LWL budget?
As an independent private foundation under civil law, the foundation funds are not part of the LWL budget.
Application
Do I have to send my application digitally?
Applications should preferably be submitted digitally by e-mail by February 28 (February 29 in a leap year) or August 31 by 11:59 pm. Alternatively, postal delivery is still possible. The postmark is valid.
Can I submit an application without advice?
The prior consultation is an optional offer.
Can I start the project before the funding decision?
No. This so-called early start of measures is generally not possible.
Will I receive information during the decision-making process?
No. No information about the possible funding decision will be provided between the application and the decision of the Board of Trustees.
Do I have to enclose proof of non-profit status with my application?
The application must clearly state that the project-supporting institution has a certificate of non-profit status or has applied for one (e.g. in the case of an association being founded). Proof is mandatory at the latest when the funding agreement is concluded.
Can I submit an application as a municipal institution even if I do not have proof of non-profit status?
Yes, provided the project sponsor certifies that the project is not carried out as a commercial enterprise (BgA).
Funding priority 2028 "AI & Culture"
Do the usual funding criteria also apply to the thematic focus?
Yes, all information on the usual eligibility criteria can be found here.
Can I also present projects without a thematic reference to "AI & Culture" during the deadlines?
Yes, the focus complements the general, open-topic funding program of the LWL-Kulturstiftung.
Are purely technical projects eligible for funding?
No, projects that are limited solely to the use of AI without independent artistic contributions or reflection are not eligible for funding.
How should the use of AI relate to the artistic part?
The application must clearly demonstrate the applicant’s own artistic creative process and the use of AI for the realization of the project.
Can I use existing AI systems or do I have to develop my own AI applications?
The use of existing AI systems is possible. No in-house development is expected.
Are collaborations possible?
Yes, cooperation with institutions and (research) facilities is generally possible.
Project implementation
Do I have to state what I am using the funds for when I request them?
No. The call for funds as an informal mail includes the total amount as it will be used in the project in a timely manner (usually within three months).
Can I also call up the funds in one go?
20% of the funds are withheld until the proof of use has been checked. The remaining 80% can be drawn down in one go, provided that the funds are spent promptly (usually within three months) after being drawn down. LWL facilities are exempt from withholding the last 20%.
How quickly will the final report be reviewed and when can I expect the remaining 20% of the funds to be paid out?
The processing time varies depending on the scope and completeness of the where-used list. Gaps or details that require consultation and, if necessary, clarification will prolong this process.
Communication
How does my event get into the calendar?
Events and offers within the scope of the funded projects can be sent to us, stating all key data (title, date, location, short text). Please only mention events whose key data are known.
Are events that are not sponsored by the LWL-Kulturstiftung also included in the calendar and on social media?
No. The prerequisite for inclusion in the LWL-Kulturstiftung’s calendar and social media is that the project is funded by the LWL-Kulturstiftung.
