The Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen has been hosting a theater festival for 80 years: Grown out of solidarity between the Hamburg Theater and State Opera and the miners of the König Ludwig 4/5 colliery in Recklinghausen, today it is one of the oldest, largest and most renowned theater festivals in Europe.
International drama and dance theater, productions by major German-language theaters, literature, as well as outstanding productions of the New Circus and selected children’s and youth theater productions form the core of the contemporary program.
Every year, the festival season starts on May 1st and presents numerous events as well as discourse formats and participatory offers until mid-June. This year there are around 80 productions and more than 220 performances!
