The traveling exhibition from the Jewish Museum of Westphalia in Dorsten is making a stop in Bielefeld. Through biographies and documents, it explores the contributions of Westphalian Jewish women who were active in the early women’s movement both regionally and beyond. Access to education and employment, the right to vote, fair working conditions, and control over their own bodies were issues that concerned these women. Jewish women were well-represented in this movement and faced multiple forms of discrimination: as women and as Jews. They were active both within and outside Jewish organizations and also focused on the role of women in Jewish communities.

In this traveling exhibition, visitors will learn about nine of these Jewish women activists from Westphalia, who have been brought to life through artistic interpretations by students at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. Interactive stations invite visitors to explore how the early women’s movement is relevant to us today!
