Together with historian Dr. Iris Helbing, artist Katja Kottmann gives a guided tour of the site of the former camp for displaced persons in the Haltern-West district and provides insights into a hitherto little-known chapter of post-war history. The entire Haltern-West district – previously a residential area and still used as such today – was cleared to accommodate the displaced persons who lived there from 1945 to 1948.

Participants learn about the conditions under which the DPs lived there and how they still managed to make their everyday lives remarkable.

Dr. Iris Helbing is Head of the Cultural Department of the City of Meiningen. With her 2006 master’s thesis Fehl am Platz? Polish Displaced Persons in Westphalia after 1945, she researched the camp in Haltern for the first time.
